Supplementary examination dates and procedures
PLEASE NOTE: This date for supplementary exams takes place after the universities' admission period has ended. That's why the start of a regular study at university in winter semester 2024 is not possible at this exam date! We recommend not to finish the preparation program (your last supplementary exam) at this exam date.
- Registration: October 12th to October 25th (12.00 noon, CEST) 2024, online: The registration is completed!
- Mathematics (written exam): November 4th, 2.15 p.m.
- German (written exam): November 5th, 2.15 p.m.
- English (written exam): November 6th, 2.15 p.m.
- Oral exams (all subjects): November 25th to November 28th, 2024
- Issue of certificates: December 2nd 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the office (or afterwards during opening hours in the office). Please note that you have to show your photo ID.
- Registration: December 6th to December 19th (12.00 noon, CET) 2024, online
- English (written exam): January 13th, 2.15 p.m.
- Mathematics (written exam): January 14th, 2.15 p.m.
- German (written exam): January 15th, 2.15 p.m.
- Oral exams (all subjects): January 27th to January 31st, 2025
- Issue of certificates: At the earliest one day after the oral exam: January 29th to February 3rd, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in front of the office (or afterwards during opening hours in the office). Please note that you have to show your photo ID.
- Registration: February 15th to February 28th (12.00 noon, CET) 2025, online
- Mathematics (written exam): March 10th, 2.15 p.m.
- German (written exam): March 11th, 2.15 p.m.
- English (written exam): March 12th, 2.15 p.m.
- Oral exams (all subjects): March 24th to March 27th, 2025
- Issue of certificates: March 28th, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the office (or afterwards during opening hours in the office). Please note that you have to show your photo ID.

- German (written exam): April 7th, 2.15 p.m.
- English (written exam): April 8th, 2.15 p.m.
- Mathematics (written exam): April 9th, 2.15 p.m.
- Oral exams (all subjects): May 5th to May 8th, 2025
- Issue of certificates: May 12th 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the office (or afterwards during opening hours in the office). Please note that you have to show your photo ID.
Registration for supplementary examinations
A registration for supplementary examinations is not possible at the moment. The instructions for an online registration for supplementary examinations can be found here at the beginning of the next registration period (German only).
Supplementary examinations - general information
- There are 3 dates for supplementary examinations per semester:
- Winter semester: September, October/November, January
- Summer semester: March, April/May, June
- Please mind the application deadline!
- Examination fees:
- 66 euros: Examination fee for German, English, Mathematics each.
- 46 euros: Examination fee for History, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry each.
- For the registration you need a valid admission letter from a scientific Viennese university which states the supplementary examination you want to register for.
- It is also possible to register for supplementary examinations if you are not currently registered for a course within the Preparation Programme.
- The supplementary examinations are taken in the presence of a board of examiners (Prüfungssenat) at the VWU.
- The board of examiners consists of three members: the examiner, another lecturer of the VWU and a representative of the university, who chairs the board.
- For the oral examination in German, English and mathematics passing the written examination is required.
- A deregistration from the exam is only possible up to one week before the exam date. In the case of oral exams, you can cancel your registration up to one week before the first day of the oral exams.
Grades: 1 (very good), 2 (good), 3 (satisfactory), 4 (sufficient), 5 (not sufficient). Grade 5 means “negative”, i.e. fail. Candidates may take a supplementary exam up to five times.

Supplementary examination procedures and examiners
Information concerning Covid-19
All written and oral exams are planned to take place in person.
If there is an unexpected resurgence of Covid-19 and the measures placed by the government of Austria cause changes in the exam procedure of specific exam dates, the following procedures, as agreed upon by the VWU Comission, will instead be applicable:
- German and English: If written exams are not able to be written in person, the written part will be replaced by an extended oral exam to be taken digitally via video conference.
- Mathematics: If written and oral exams cannot be taken in person, the exam will be postponed until it can be taken in person.
- History and Geography: If exams are not able to take place in person, a digital exam via video conference will be taken.
- Physics, Chemistry, Biology: If exams cannot be taken in person, the exam will be postponed until it can be taken in person.
We will inform exam candidates accordingly if any changes are made to these decisions.
